The 5W Resume + Interview Toolkit.

Zero fluff. Everything here helps you win the next step and tell your story with precision. Start at the top, move left to right, and treat this page as your resume and interview control center.

Make million-dollar stories sound second-grade simple.

Step 1 · 30-Second Overview

How to Use This Page in One Glance.

Three blocks make the map: thesis bullet, 5W coverage, and STAR stories. Once these are tight, your resume and interviews get a lot easier.

1) Tune Your “Thesis Bullet”

Goal: define scope in one line so any CHRO or CEO gets you instantly.

  • Open each role with who you reported to, population, scope, and mandate.
  • Then stack 3 to 5 verb-then-result bullets.
  • Name partners: CEO, CFO, Plant, IT, Finance.

2) Cover the 5W + H

Goal: every bullet answers who, what, where, when, why, or how.

  • Run each project through all six.
  • Quantify headcount, sites, dollars, timelines.
  • Tie to outcomes: retention, time-to-fill, cost.

3) Bring 3 to 5 STAR Stories

Goal: ready-made stories that sound natural, never rehearsed.

  • Situation · Task · Action · Result.
  • Lead with the result; backfill the how.
  • One story per core competency.
Step 2 · Open Each Job the Same Way

The Role “Thesis Bullet” (First Line Under Every Title).

Template: “Report to VP of X supporting X,000 employees across X locations. Primary partner to CEO, CFO, VP Sales, Plant Leaders. Mandate: rebuild leadership bench, reduce time-to-fill 30%, stand up HRIS.”

Language Moves

  • Start with Lead, Create, Build, Launch, Negotiate, Manage.
  • Skip “I,” “responsible for,” and “various.”
  • Place the verb first, the result close behind.

Example Bullets

  • Created career framework for Ops, cutting turnover 22% in 12 months.
  • Led TA overhaul across 18 sites, taking time-to-fill from 42 to 28 days.
  • Negotiated benefits renewal, saving $1.1M with parity coverage.
Step 3 · Check the 5W Coverage

The 5 W’s + How: State Each One Explicitly.

Run every role through this checklist. Any W that’s missing gets added to a bullet or the thesis line.

Who

Populations and levels (execs, plant hourly, tech) and partners (Finance, IT, Supply Chain, Legal).

What

Step 4 · Build Your Story Bank

The STAR Library (Keep These Handy).

Build 3 to 5 stories matching the job’s competencies. Practice each in 60 to 90 seconds so they sound human, never rehearsed.

Situation specific context (plant ramp, acquisition, strike risk) Task your objective (reduce time-to-hire, stabilize shift coverage) Action what you did (tools, partnerships, sequencing) Result quantified outcomes (retention up, cost down, cycle time cut)
Step 5 · Interview Prep

The Interview Prep Checklist (Do These First).
